A Flying Hero

Many people don't realize that talents can lead to becoming a hero. Born on July 24, 1897, a young woman followed her dreams. Setting and breaking many records, she was the bravest woman I ever heard and learned about. Setting goals and hearing about how great she was, I realized it wasn't about the fame, it was about her story. "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself," Joseph Campbell. Amelia Earhart is my hero.

Amelia had a big heart. Ever since she saw her first plane fly from up close, she knew what she fell in love with: "I believe that little red airplane said something to me as it swished by." Amelia was a nurse aid in a military Hospital in Canada during WWI. Furthermore, she kept a scrapbook of newspaper clippings about successful women. Even though she was a tough girl, a tomboy, she was brave to come out and do what she loved doing. She saved enough money on her own to buy her first plane "Canary." To get further in what she loved she attended a stunt-flying exhibition. Amelia is seen to me as a hero for setting goals on her own and reaching them.

Being a good achiever, Amelia was offered to fly the Atlantic. Even if three women had died within a year attempting this, she still did it. Amelia is another great hero for taking any challenge no matter what. She became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Twenty-one hours later she made headline world wide. No matter the fame, Amelia followed her heart and dreams. She even gave herself a bigger challenge, to set a goal to be the first woman to fly around the world. Amelia is a hero for extending the possible, she always believed in herself and supporters.

Amelia didn't have the best life when she was younger; neither was she rich or upper class. Starting from scratch and studying hard on her own, she managed to learn what she was meant for. All her hard work paid off. She loved her fans from around the world, family, friends, and her husband. She was always greeted and welcomed by many of the countries she visited. Continuing her biggest goal, her last flight was to Howland Island. Unluckily it was interrupted by bad weather and low fuel. Having the most extensive air and sea search in naval history, Amelia was never found.

The world will always remember her courage, vision, and achievement in aviation and being a woman.  Amelia was a great example to me more then her records, but setting goals and doing what love takes you. No matter what you are you can follow your dreams, Just like Amelia dying from doing what she had heart for. I never thought of a better hero. She has taught me to accept challenges and take it right then, "Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but challenged by others."
