Austin Gutwein

by Haley from Reynoldsburg

My hero is a 14 year old boy, named Austin Gutwein. He founded the organization called "Hoops for Hope". This is when you shoot free throws to raise money for certain causes. Even at such a young age he took actions upon himself, which is what really caught my attention.

By doing something as simple as free throws Hoops for Hope raised over 3 million dollars. The money went to kids out in Africa which provided them care, food and shelter. Some of the money also went to kids in an orphanage. Over the past 9 years Austins effort has turned into the largest free throw marathon in the world with about 40,000 people in more than 25 countries participating. Austins message is one of hope.

In 2009 Austin was selected as one of the most top 10 caring Americans by the Caring Institute. He has been featured on NBC Today Show and many other local news shows.

Austin is currently a freshman at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. He is majoring in Political science and economics. Austin Gutwein is my hero because he took a selfless act and inspired and encouraged many people to make a difference.
