Anne Sullivan

by Kaileigh from Hingham

My hero is Anne Sullivan. Anne was a remarkable person. The goals she set were nothing close to what people thought Anne would be able to achieve. Despite her vision problems, like her student, Helen Keller she always remained determined, positive, and a trustworthy person. She had changed Helen Keller’s life because she kept trying. She had believed in her. She would stay in charge of Helen and try to let nothing stop her. Anne Sullivan is my hero in many ways because of the traits that she held.

Anne Sullivan was a determined individual throughout her entire life. She demonstrated her determination while working with Helen and never stopped trying to find a way to help Helen communicate and interact with others. When Anne Sullivan first met her, Helen could not communicate because she was mute, deaf and blind. Anne would repeatedly try to get Helen to listen and follow her. When Anne was growing up she faced her own struggles. Anne had contracted a disease at the age of five, which left her blind for a period of time. She had a rough childhood and was eventually brought to a poor house. This didn’t stop her though. While at the poor house she became determined to go to school. This school was a school for the blind. One day she threw herself at her caretaker at the orphanage and begged him to let her go to school. She was eventually able to go. Anne had been determined to do well in school and put herself out there for others even in hard times. Anne worked hard and learned sign language. She was able to graduate from Perkins Institute for the Blind.

Anne Sullivan was also very positive individual. She was not just positive but she was kind and encouraging to people too. Anne had believed in herself and also in Helen. When Anne was first trying to teach Helen, she would give Helen objects that she loved (dolls, toy, and treats) and to help her show what things mean, so Helen could understand. And would wait and also congratulate Helen when she was doing well. The bond they had together was strong. Anne had supported Helen when she was learning how to speak clearly. She knew that they could work through Helen’s struggles and make things better for both of them. Together they were able to accomplish many goals that they set. Many of the goals that have been achieved surprised most people. Anyone who came in contact with them were amazed at what Anne had been able to teach Helen. Together Anne and Helen were known almost everywhere because of what Anne was able to achieve. Anne had traveled everywhere with Helen, and would act as Helen’s eyes and ears. In many of Helen’s writing and public speaking endeavors, Anne supported and encouraged her. Anne’s positive attitude had been an important reason to why Helen was able to succeed.

Anne was a trustworthy person. One of the main reasons Helen was able to communicate well was because she could trust Anne. Anne didn’t leave Helen in the dark. She worked through all of Helen’s tantrums and meltdowns when teaching Helen. Helen knew she could count on Anne to be there for her. When Helen traveled, Anne was there to guide and support her. People had thought it was useless for Helen to learn, and that did not let that stop Anne. Helen could trust Anne to stick with her regardless of the difficulties they faced. When Anne was little, she and her brother were going to go to an orphanage but, in the end, they would each be going to different places. Anne made sure that she and her brother would not get separated, and not let her brother down. Anne has been someone both Helen and Anne’s brother could look up to for help.

Anne Sullivan inspired me for what she was able to do for Helen Keller, and she was able to do. Being so trustworthy, positive and determined made Anne so special and unique. I know she has also inspired many people on everything she did. Then, how she did do so much to help Helen and accomplish her goals. Helen was a great friend to Anne and they had both been very important in both of each other's lives. I believe Anne Sullivan had changed the perspective of what some people thought could not be accomplished. She was able to never give up and to try hard, just like Anne Sullivan had done.
