Ben Carson

by Michael from Atlanta

America’s Brain Hero

Dr. Ben Carson is my hero because of his heroic actions of saving the lives of conjoined twins and giving them separate lives. Dr. Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan. His life was very hectic as a child. His father walked out on him and his brother, Curtis. Because of this his mother had to get two maybe three jobs to pay for a roof over their head and food on the table. The mother couldn’t always get the best job because she dropped out of school in the third grade. Even with these challenges the mother made Ben and his brother work very hard on school work. She made them read two books a week from the local library which broadened their knowledge. With this new found knowledge Dr. Ben Carson found that he wanted to be a doctor.

While Dr. Ben Carson was working as the head of pediatric neurosurgery in Michigan, he was brought up with a task of separating conjoined twins heads. This had never been done successfully. Dr. Carson was going to do something that had failed every time. The twins we called the Binder twins. Going into the procedure Dr. Carson was doubtful but had to keep a sound mind and stay positive. He was going to attempt to separate the twins in a completely different way in which they advised at school. So Dr. Carson embarked on this adventure. His team consisted of seventy members and lasted for twenty-two hours. The odds were against him but he ended up separating the twins and giving them each different lives. The twins will always be forever grateful to Dr. Carson. He has given them a chance to live normal lives as two different people and he created the right procedure to go about separating the twin’s heads.

Dr. Carson is a prime example of a hero. I have learned that you don’t have to come from wealth or have special powers and or abilities to be a hero. You can be an average person who comes from any type of background and make a difference in someone’s life.
