Beverly Cleary

by Cassie from DuBois

Children should learn that reading is pleasure, not just something that teachers make you do in school.

In honor of Beverly Cleary, I did research about this hero in “Biography Today.” I chose Beverly because she writes many interesting and fun to read books. After the research, I was glad I did because I learned so much about her.

Who knew such a normal beginning would give the world such a hero? Beverly Bunn Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon. She was born on April 12, 1916. Her parents' names were Chester and Mable Bunn. Beverly was married in 1940 to Clarence Cleary. They had twins and named them Marianne and Malcolm. Beverly is still alive and is 94 years old.

The foundation of heroism is education. When Beverly was little, she went to Fernwood Grammar Elementary School in Portland. In high school, she went to U.S. Grant High School in Portland. In college, she went to Chaffery Junior College in Ontario, California.

Hard work contributes to heroism. Beverly writes a new book every year! She writes her books on the same day each year on January 2. Beverly Cleary does that because her first book came out on this day. Her first book, Henry Huggins, was written in 3rd grade. She won many awards like the American Book Award, Newbery Medal, and many, many more.

Beverly Cleary is important to mankind and changed the world. Her 1st job was a librarian at the Yakima Public Library, in Washington, and was a storyteller. Her books make children want to read, because they are so creative, interesting, and imaginative.
