Balto

by Ashley from Monroe

Balto is my hero because he saved his pack and his town from dying by delivering medication through a snow storm. The reason Balto is my hero is because he saved many of people from dying from sickness and his pack from a snow storm.

How it all started: On January 1925 Doctors had just realized that there was deadly Diphtheria had just started to go through the Nome area. The only way that the Doctors could help the town’s people were to get the only aircraft that could deliver the medication. But there was a problem, the only aircraft they had was taken out for the winter. The only way the Doctors could get the medicine to Nome was by sled dogs.

How they got the medicine to Nome: To get the medicine to Nome by sled dogs was to make a relay. When the doctors started the relay they found out that there were more than twenty mushers bravely faced a blizzard, which was -23 degrees Fahrenheit with fierce winds. There were two main teams that had joined the relay: Norwegian Gunnar Kaasen and Leonhard Seppala. The lead dog to Norwegian Gunnar Kaasen was Balto and the lead dog to Leonhard Seppala was Togo.

How Balto saved his pack: Balto saved his pack by keeping them on the trail when they were going through a whiteout condition. How that saved his pack was because Kaasen had said “I could barely see my hand in front of me.” And that caused his team to miss the other sled dog pack. So they had to go twice as far as they were supposed to go. That is why Balto is a hero to me and some other people, because he saved other peoples lives.
