Blackie the Horse

by Spencer from Tiburon

Blackie is a horse who was born in Kansas in 1926. He liked to stand still under a juniper tree. One day a cowboy bought him and took him to Salinas, CA to rope bulls. When Blackie got too sway backed to ride, the man was retired and Blackie was sold to a Yosemite army captain. Every day the army captain would sit on Blackie and take pictures with tourist. When his picture career was over Blackie was sold to an oyster man from Tiburon. And the man had to bribe him with apples, carrots and sugar cubes to make him come with him. When his picture career was over Blackie was sold to an oyster man from Tiburon. And the man had to bribe him with apples, carrots and sugar cubes to make him come with him. After the long drive from Yosemite to Tiburon, the man dropped him off at an old pasture. A couple months later a man came to the pasture and said this looks like a good place to put my mall. the mayor said no! A long time passed and Blackie lived there 28 years. But one day Blackie fell and people started to cry because everyone knew he was going to die. That night he died in his sleep. He died in 1966. In 1995 they made a statue of Blackie in the middle of his pasture.

I think Blackie is a hero because he saved the pasture from being a shopping mall. Now people fly kites and play tag and people get to enjoy this land like Blackie did. Now every day I pass Blackie's Pasture I think of him. That is why I think Blackie is a hero.
