Charles Bolden

Charles Bolden was the first African American to be NASA's administrator. He was born in 1946, in Columbia, South Carolina. He lived in Houston, Texas. He is 64 years old. He has a bachelor's degree in electrical science, and a master's degree in systems management.

He was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1980. His NASA career included technical assignments as the Astronaut Office Safety Officer. He also was an astronaut for 4 trips into space. He retired from NASA in 1994. He was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in May of 2006. He was named NASA administrator in 2009.

He also was in the U.S. Marines. In fact, he was in the Marines for 34 years and he was in over 100 combat missions. He started his career with the Marines in 1969. In the Marines, he reached the rank of major general. He was assigned as the Deputy Commanding General of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in the Pacific in 1997. He retired from the Marines in 2003.
