Chuck Yeager

by Kapila from Hillsborough

"Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore." - Andre Gide

This quote describes Chuck Yeager because he discovered what no could discover or do for the next couple or years.

Chuck Yeager was born on February 13, 1923 in Myra, West Virginia. He joined the Air Force during World War II as a private and became an air mechanic at an air base in California. Later he was promoted to flight officer and was sent overseas. He is now a retired major general.

Chuck Yeager has done a lot of amazing things, he has seen many things, and he has been through many conflicts and wars. He fought in WWII and the Vietnam War. He broke the sound barrier on October 14, 1947 while flying the Bell X-1. But the day before he broke the sound barrier he broke two ribs while riding a horse so when he was flying the plane he was in a lot of pain. Chuck Yeager has many characteristics. Some of them are bravery, strong- willed, and open- minded.

Chuck Yeager has contributed to society by breaking the sound barrier. If he had not broken the sound barrier someone else might have but if someone else didn't then we would not have planes going at speeds of mach one.

Chuck Yeager is an inspiration for me because he was in the Air Force and because he did what people thought impossible. Another reason for why he inspires me is because a video game was made after him called Chuck Yeager's Air Combat.
