Connie O'Connell

by Mychal from Huntington

Connie is a hero to me because when she was 3 years old her sister was born. Eleven months later her sister was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). The doctors thought she would only have an 8% chance of surviving. With the help of her parents she would be able to fight through. Later on she was back into the world of constant death threats.

Connie remembered the feeling of hope she had when her sister’s second remission happened. Her cancer was cured because she stayed in remission for 5 years. Before she could reach 3 years old cancerous cells started taking over her body. Every time she had spinal taps to her back she showed bravery. Her parents used to push her down the halls while she was on an IV stand.

During the summer Connie would spend her days swimming in the pool. In 1999 during the summer she could not swim or ride her bike. She spent her summer days in the hospital tied down with tubes monitoring her every breath. Halloween came and the last time she spent a day at her house was carving a pumpkin on her deck. That is when she became much worse.

It is just amazing to me that she overcame (ALL) at the age of three. She is my hero because she is so brave. Although she did not live past the six, she still tried. I am picking her as my hero because I can look up to her as being my role model. She is also a hero to me because she was so young and went through all those treatments. That’s why I picked Connie O’Connell to be my hero.
