Anne Frank vs. Nick Jonas

by Sabrina from San Mateo

''There is always some way to find hope. Remember that.''- Nick Jonas

Dreams, we all have them at one point of our lives; some come true, many don't. Anne Frank was a young girl who lived in Holland with her family. On her 13th birthday she received a diary, a diary that she wrote in everyday for the next 3 years. During those 3 years, Hitler had come into power and took over Holland. Torture and hatred are some of the many things Anne and other Jews felt each and everyday. In the diary there are many entries of a life of a teenage girl going through a life-changing event. In comparison, Nick Jonas is a singer/songwriter that is a solo singer and in a band call the Jonas Brothers. Nick isn't like most celebrities, he's unique. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 13. As his career with the Jonas Brothers grew more and more popular, he finally realized that his fans were what kept him going and doing what he loves - singing. In fact, he wrote a song for his fans about how they are his passion and they are the reason he sings. Anne and Nick always dreamed of having their dreams come true.

Unlike Nick, Anne wrote in her diary everyday to express her feelings. Anne is now known for writing in her diary everyday. Her diary was basically her best friend, she would always gossip about the others living with her. During the time of the war, there was not much she could do but to just write. Knowing that out of the Secret Annexe there was danger all over, she would always somehow put a happy perspective on everything; neither bad or sad. Like any other teenager, Anne had boy troubles, girl troubles, and family troubles. But her situation was different, she seemed more mature talking on the inside and when she talked about her problems and about people. She isn't like a normal teenager. "Those violent outbursts on paper were only giving vent to anger which in a normal life could have been worked off by stamping my feet a couple of times in a locked room..." ("Diary of Anne Frank" pg.128)

On the other hand, Nick always wanted his dreams to come true. At the age of 13, Nick was diagnosed with Diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes. Diabetes had really affected his life and the way he had to live it. It changed the way he ate, exercised, did activities, and sang. It really affected him that he may never be the same; living a different lifestyle is hard, but not impossible. At a young age, Nick was known as a performer; a singer. It really started to hit him that his fans were his fire, after successfully being part of the Jonas Brothers. "I want people to know I am not going to let this slow me down!" -Nick Jonas (Twitter.com). After all that Nick has been through he wanted everyone, including his fans, to know that he was never going to give up because of his Diabetes.

However, the two are similar in many ways. Nick Jonas and Anne Frank are somehow similar. First off, they both wanted something; Anne wanted freedom, while Nick wanted others to understand what he is going through. They both have loving families supporting them every step of the way. Although Anne expressed her mother as someone she didn't really care much for, in the end, Anne realized she had a bit of sympathy for her. Nick relied on his parents ever since he was a baby. Expressing their feelings is a similarity that they have. Anne shows her feelings and her expressions on paper. Nick shows his through singing. In many ways, writing in a diary is like writing lyrics to a song; you can say it in an angry way or you could sing it in a happy way. Throughout their lives, they have managed to inspire people with their perseverance to achieve their dreams to come true and their integrity to make a goal, but also wanting the best for others. Even though they are completely different people and have different personalities, they are alike in so many ways.

Anne and Nick have similarities and differences. I think they wanted the same thing, freedom. Freedom from the war and freedom from failure. Nick Jonas is an amazing singer who has changed the minds of many listeners. Anne was a discovered writer who changed thoughts of thousands of thinkers all around the world. Having your desired wish come true isn't as easy as it sounds.
