Alexis

by Natalie from Montague

What is a hero? It's not someone who has magical powers or can save people from evil. A hero is someone who has been through real challenges, and is still moving on. A hero is someone who impacts someone's life just from the simple things they do. My hero is just a girl, a girl who hasn't made a difference in the world, but made a difference in my life. My best friend. is Alexis L. She is an amazingly intriguing person, who is always there for me and is just an overall kind person.

Alexis is a very interesting person, with all the things she did and overcame. When I first met her she was a shy, quiet girl. But not long after we met, I could tell it was going to be a long-lasting friendship. She always found a way to make me laugh with the weird, intriguing things she did. Alexis was one of the most interesting people I've ever met. She was an artist, she could draw pretty much anything and always took however long was needed to make it. For my birthday, she would draw pictures of us, and I still have them hanging on the walls of my bedroom. Something in her life always seemed to be happening, you could call it coincidence, but I just think it's bad luck. Somehow she always managed to power through it, even when I could see it was wearing her down. She influenced me to be a better, more compelling person.

Alexis always found a way to be there for me no matter what she was going through at the time. At the beginning of this year, Alexis moved away. Now she is more than two hours away from where I live. At the moment, it has been six months since I last saw her in person. Somehow, she still manages to still always be there for me and talk to me when I need her. Whether it's on skype or through texting, she finds a way to help me figure my problems out, and make me laugh while she's at it. I know that at her new school, she hasn't been having the greatest time, yet I still see her with a smile on her face, though I know she doesn't want to be smiling. Sometimes we go weeks without talking, but that's okay, because I know that when we do talk, she will be there to hear everything I say.

Alexis was probably one of the sweetest people I've met in a long time. We all get angry sometimes, but she was able to contain it and not take it out on the people she loves, unlike some people. If you went up to anybody that she knew, I have no doubt they would say she is one of the kindest, most modest, and inspiring persons you've ever met. Even though it is almost the end of this school year, people still tell me they miss her. To me, she is my other half, two peas in a pod most people said. I have come to notice that, after all the disagreements we've been in, which aren't many, that I would rather be angry with her, than without her. But it's very hard to be angry with someone who cleans out your locker for you just because they can, or sends you the most humane letters you could ever get from someone. She is absolutely the most thoughtful, kind-hearted person out there.

A hero to you might be astonishing, and incredible with amazing things they've done to help the world, and while that's all great, the real hero to me is someone who has been there for me, and taught me to be my best self. She taught me to be my best by being herself, by being interesting, being there for me, and just being nice to everyone and everything no matter what. She once told me, "It's too hard to forget someone that has given you so much to remember." This relates to her a lot because I will never forget my hero, the person who has made the biggest impact in my life. My best friend, Alexis L.
