How Zitkala-Sa Inspires Us

Mia

Zitkala-Sa was a Native American.  She left her home and went to boarding school.  She was taken away from her family.  The white people would not let her be herself and they made her change everything about herself.  She kept the Native American ways in her heart and she taught others about the Native American ways.  She knew that the traditions and ways of her people are important.

Elise
Zitkala-Sa was a Native American.  She showed the Native American people that their culture is important.  She shared the legends and stories of her people.  She fought for her people to have equal rights as the white people.

Holly
Zitkala-Sa once lived with the Native Americans.  She went away to boarding school.  She got a good education.  The white people made her change her hair and her clothes.  She wanted to be herself.  She wanted the Native American people to be proud of themselves and their culture.

Kayla
Zitkala-Sa left her family at the age of 12.  She went to the white people's school.  She learned how to play the violin and she became a teacher.  She wrote a book about the Native American ways.  She taught the children about the Native American ways.
How We Are Similar to Zitkala-Sa

Mia

I cut my hair when I was little like Zitkala-Sa.  I am an American and she was a Native American.  I miss my family when I go to my friend's house.  She must have missed her family when she was away for a long time at school.

Elise
In Kindergarten, we studied Native Americans.  We learned all about their food, clothes, games, and stories.  I think that it is important to learn about different cultures like Zitkala-Sa did.  We all need to show respect to each other.

Holly
I cut my long hair like Zitkala-Sa.  I dress myself in fancy dresses, too.  I learned to read and write like she did.  I've heard many Native American legends like she told.

Kayla
I am an American like her.  My mom wants me to get a good education and that's why Zitkala-Sa's mom sent her away to school.  I treat everyone with respect like Zitkala-Sa did.
