GRANDPARENTS FROM OUR GUESTBOOK

Visitors to our guestbook name their own grandparents as heroes.
Nima Rosensfit from Staten Island, New York
My heroes are my great grandparents. A long time ago in
Russia under the Dictatorship of Czar Nicholas. The Jews were
tortured by the Cossacks. My Great grandparents escaped the
Cossacks. My great grandpa first. He traveled to England got a
job on a ship and then once he got to America jumped ship.
Later on he was to become a strike leader. My great grandma
escaped by foot. She traveled with her younger sister, a few
belongings , and 2 babies. Traveling at night to be sure and
miss the Cossacks. She carried a big responsibility. And lived up to it.
Alexis from Oakland, California
My hero is my grandfather. He always helps others and never
thinks of himself first. He works on a program called Meals on
Wheels. It brings breakfast, lunch, and dinner to old people
who can't get out because they're too weak. He is also very
generous towards my sister, cousin, and me. He helps fix things around my house and other peoples houses for free. He owns a
lot of land which he also owns houses on. If the people who live
in the house pay the rent a little late he doesn't make them
pay extra. He understands that money was low that month and
that they would pay it back when they had more money. He is
very considerate. When I grow up I want to be just like him.
Jennifer Kurtz from Allentown, Pennsylvania

My hero is my Grammy, Helen Pratley. She is respectful and yet strong. Two years ago she almost lost her leg. She had a four inch long hole in her leg that didn't heal because she is a diabetic. It finally healed and she is now O.K. She will also be good to my family. She might take us out to lunch or breakfast if we are off in school or on vacation. I also love her very, very much. My Grammy will also help people that live around her. She will take a friend to the doctor or grocery store if they need to go. She is respectful and strong and my hero that I love very much.
Heath from Boise, Idaho
My hero is Robert C. Price. Robert C. Price is my grandfather
who passed away in 1986. the reason he is my hero is because
he exemplified the word courage and dignity, and his family
always came first. He battled diabetes until his body could not
with stand the strain of this dreadful disease. Yet, he never let
it get in the way of the love he had for his family. I look upon
him as my hero because he not only loved me but showed me
how to be a quality human being through action and behavior.
He showed me, through his actions, about courage and that
you never give up no matter what the circumstances, and that
there are times when you don't feel like doing something but it is the right thing to do anyway My papa is my hero because he loved and still loves me today. I will carry on the examples of his legacy and create my own while keeping one thing in mind. And that is to love God, love your family and lead by example. Miss you and Love you Pops, Heath
Kimen Field from Irvine, CA USA
My hero is my grandmother because she has survived so much
and is still alive and well at 80. She has a positive outlook on
things too. She is a holocaust survivor of World War 2 and was
in the concentration camp Bergen-Belson, and her entire family perished. She came to the USA by herself, married, had 2 kids, and lived the American Dream. She then had breast cancer
twice, and my grandpa died of a heart attack 25 years ago. She
also has diabetes and has to live with tattoos from the war
every day. She doesn't let her misfortunes interfere with her
life anymore, and she travels and experiences life to the
fullest. She pulled up from being poor when she came to this
country, and after being very wealthy in Germany before the
war. She is wonderful, and I love her very much
Sarah Farrow from Butte, Montana
My hero is my grandmother. She is my hero because she is
always there to cheer me on, push me forward, and give me
lessons on self-control. I have learned a lot from her, and I
would like to say, I LOVE YOU GRANDMA SHIRLEY!
Nick Mangini from Sitka, Alaska
My hero is: my grandpa. because he is smart, he loves me no
matter what, he always listens, even if it is not good he says I
did it, but most all because no matter what I do wrong or right
he is always trying to help me to improve in it so I can be my
best and help my kids also because he made my papa.
Manuel Castillo from Roseville, CA USA
My hero is my dad. I think a hero is someone that you respect
and is always there for you in good times and also bad times.
My hero is my dad because he does a lot for me. Even when I
get mad at him he still does things for me. My dad risked his
life for me lots of times and saved my life and always took care
of me when I had cuts or I was sick. That's why I think my
dad's my hero. When my dad reads this I want him to know
that I love him. I think that there should be more heroes like
that.
Monique Avakian from Hastings on Hudson, N.Y.
My hero is my grandmother because she saved my sister and
me when we were abandoned by our heroin-addicted teenage
"mother". She (and my grandfather) took us in and loved us.
She led a life of bitterness because of so many obstacles that
she could not find her way around. She and her sisters were
forced to quit school before finishing Jr. high, so that the two
boys in the family could graduate from high school. She was
extremely intelligent, and this hurt her greatly. She worked
hard all of her life and to have to suddenly care for two small
children (one handicapped and one out of control--we were
abused by our drug-addicted "mother"), was a great sacrifice. I
would not be alive today if it were not for her, and I could
never have cared for my own daughter properly without her as
a model. She was a strong, intelligent, poor, uneducated
woman, tied to the kitchen, unknown, unsung, but never, ever,
forgotten by me for her courage, bravery, love and tenderness.
Cheryl Moat-Trujillo from Farmington, NM
My hero is Eva Gladys Deckard-Moat. Eva Moat is my hero
because she made my childhood something that I could look
back upon and remember fondly. She encouraged me and the
other grandchildren to believe in miracles, magic and
ourselves simply by loving us and offering us a chance to
escape some of the less "enchanting" realities that creep into
our lives. Grandma Eva would have wonderful outdoor
"suppers" during the hot Indiana August days, and she would
decorate her home almost to the point that adults would say it
was in poor taste, but we loved her home and we loved her. We
loved spending the night and staying up late eating ice cream
and popcorn and watching monster movies. We loved going for
walks and hearing talk of the "olden days" when grandma was a
girl. Even now as Eva is crippled by arthritis and her mind
clouded by a recent stroke, her smile and unconditional love
helps me through. My visits to Grandma Eva aren't so much for
her as for me, so that I can become more focused and
centered, and remember who it is I am.
Lizzy Friedman from Laguna Beach, CA
My Hero is my grandma. She is my hero because she works very
hard. She designed jackets, sweatshirts, and shirts for me. She
is quite artistic and paints on clothes. She is a loving, CARING
person and a great grandma. I love her with all my heart and
that is why she is my hero.
Carlee-Ann from MB , Canada
My hero is my Grandpa. He immigrated, built big company
with sweat of brow, had nine wonderful kids and still thrives
and dreams and loves and is still young at heart
Chris from Pleasantville
Harold Kaser, my grandfather is my hero because when he was
very young his father died and he had to become the man of
the house. He had to look after his little brother and his
mother. He then went to college and became a wonderful
minister. He has taught many people how to be a good person
and how to overcome your obstacles.
Julie from Oakland, California
My hero is my grandpa, Nate Cerniglia. He is my hero because
he had to go to a school with all the grades in one classroom; it
was very hard for him. He came from Sicily and he has two
brothers. He could only go to school until he was in the
seventh grade because he had to go to work for his family.
When he was seventeen he joined the Air Force, along with his
two brothers, and fought in the Second World War. I think he is
praiseworthy for all the things he has had to go through and
the sacrifices he had to make. He should be respected because
he is honest and admirable. My grandpa is the greatest.
Toshiko from California,
My hero is my grandfather. Although he died when I wasn't
born yet, I can see him in pictures. I know that he was very
kind and friendly. I know about him from my grandmother and
he always gave clothes to the poor people and tried to help
people answer questions"
