My hero, who has inspired me since the age of four, is Mariah Carey. Mariah was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York. She is an American Pop and R&B singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Debuting in the 1990s, she became the most successful and best-selling artist of the decade. I have always admired Mariah's excellent singing abilities and her courage to deal with her problems. It was very difficult for her to deal also with issues of racism. She often turned to her music as a way to guide her through her uncertainties, and societies issues, with her fame. I admire Mariah because she was always able to put her focus on something that she loved to do and would not let anyone stop her from doing that. She's somebody to be admired because she is an example of a strong and courageous person.

A tremendous issue that Mariah was always faced with was her identity and family status. Even as a young child it was very difficult for her and family while she was growing up. "As a multiracial family, the Carey household was met with racial slurs, hostility and sometimes violence, causing the family to move frequently around the New York area." Her mother and father got a divorce when she was only three years old and her sister became a drug addict. She is still. So Mariah turned to singing as a stress reliever.

Mariah has helped a lot of people throughout her life. She donates to charities for sick children because she knows what it is like to live a hard life and she does not want anyone else to experience what she went through. Her love and hardwork for others has inspired me since I was very young. Mariah Carey is the reason I started singing. Now I love to sing. Most of my life is based on singing. And just like Mariah, I use singing as a stress reliever because it is something that I love to do and no one will ever stop me from doing it.

Even as "Merry Christmas" reached the stores, Mariah was looking ahead to her next "real" record. "I already have seven songs," she told Craig Rosen in Billboard. "I don't know when it's going to come out, but I want to go into the studio soon and start recording. I don't really stop writing and stop having musical ideas. I like to keep everything flowing." But the album was still in the formative stages. There was plenty to keep Mariah occupied, not the least of which had been the Fresh Air Fund benefit concert at St. John the Divine, a Manhattan cathedral.

I think organizations like the Fresh Air Fund are really important because some kids just don't have a role model in their lives, or someone they can get comfort from and to point out the right direction in their lives. The Fresh Air Fund was dedicated to taking underprivileged kids from New York to summer camp in the country, exposing them to another world. "I had gone to a camp when I was little," Mariah recalled in a radio interview, "it was an underprivileged kids' camp and I hated it. It was the worst experience of my life, so I thought that I could contribute to making something not so horrific as that for those kids. So they happened to have a camp that needed someone to get behind it and help with the finances and things."

Mariah Carey has gone through many hardships in her life and yet she is still a wonderful, successful, singer/actress/songwriter. She has accomplished many things in her life and that is what makes her such a great person. I admire her hard work and her ambitiousness. I hope I can grow up to be as successful and admiring as she is one day. That is why Mariah Carey is my Hero.
