SPORTS HERO:
WOMEN OF THE ALL-AMERICAN GIRLS PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL LEAGUE
by Ariel from Fort Wayne

All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (http://www.vintage-blue.com/blog/?tag=aagpbl)

I love the sport of volleyball. I dedicate my life to it. I play for most of the year; all but two months of it. I want to play all through high school and college, but what next? Unlike most sports out there, there isn't a professional women's volleyball league. I want more after college volleyball, but all there is for every volleyball player out there is one national team. So I dedicate my life to volleyball now, just so it can all stop when I am done with college. It is almost like a waste of time. I know I'm not the only one that feels this way. Many women would love to have the option of professional volleyball.

My heroes are the women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. During World War II, all the men were at war. So the women came out and with the help of Philip Wrigley, started their own baseball league. So many women had to play backyard baseball their whole lives, and they had this amazing chance to take it a step forward. It's inspirational the way these women stepped up to the plate when the opportunity was given.

The league only existed from 1943 to 1954. It started out as a combination of softball and baseball, but as the league progressed it gradually became more like baseball. The women started out making a maximum $85 dollars a week, which isn't much, but it wasn't about the money for them. These women just loved the sport. They just wanted to play baseball as much as they could. These women worked their hardest and did everything they could to keep the sport going, but the men were back from the war and the league was shut down. It's sad that the league wasn't permanent.

I would do everything I could to make volleyball a professional sport. I don't know how it would be done, but I would do anything to find out. If I ever got the chance to be on a professional volleyball team, I would give it everything I have, just like the women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. I just need to be given that chance. All volleyball players need to be given that chance.

Volleyball is just as good as any sport to be recognized as a professional sport. People pour their hearts into it and they deserve a chance to play at the next level. Basketball players and football players know that there is more out there for them. We volleyball players want something to work towards too.
