Coach Herman Boone

by Bobby from Toronto

A water break? Water is for cowards. Water makes you weak. Water is for washing blood off that uniform and you don't get no blood on my uniform, boy you must be outside your mind!

An idea is like a small seed. It begins its life small and unknown to the world and yet it is still full of potential. The one who is able to harness this seed and provide the seed with its sufficient life needs and turn it into a robust tree is the one who will benefit the most and change the world. For some it is very hard to find this “seed” and takes a lot of motivation and inspiration from someone to discover their true calling. That is what a hero is, someone who inspires you to make a change in the world. Coach Boone was an inspirational but fictional character like this in the movie Remember the Titans. Coach Herman Boone was a hero in a time of great need and was someone who didn’t stand for segregation and fought for the rights for black and white people to play football together in a time where that was often not possible. Coach Herman Boone was someone who stood out from the norm and changed the way his community acted and behaved towards black people.

Coach Herman Boone was one of the few people known to me that was willing to go outside the box and stand for something that he believed in, regardless of the consequences. The setting of the story is in an era when Americans were going through a time of great peril and distress. This era was a time when black people were shown extreme amounts of racism and it was hard to get a job let alone try to lead a team. Coach Herman Boone was in a city that unfortunately received harsher and larger amounts of racism. Coach Herman Boone was moved from his job and lived in the state of Virginia. He was reassigned to work as the head coach of a football team that only allowed white people to play. The school that Coach Herman Boone attended was T.C Williams High School. Here the segregation against blacks was so bad that he was threatened with his job. If he lost one game he would be fired and be replaced by the white head coach before him. The hatred for this black coach was so large that he experienced a brick being thrown through his window. Coach Herman Boone amongst all these problems was able to disregard what the Board had said and went on to win the State championship. One can obviously see through this that Coach Herman Boone achieved many things but to be able to inspire another man’s life is where Coach Herman Boone turns into a hero.

Coach Herman Boone did many things that inspired me to be a better person and human being. Coach Herman Boone taught me how to overcome adversity and achieve my goal. This is a life lesson that I have lived by and will continue to live by for the rest of my life. Not only did Coach Herman Boone complete this incredible deed but also, he was able to turn a team that did not have much success to begin with into a team that was able to win all their games and complete a perfect season. For me, the most reputable thing that Coach Herman Boone did would have to be how he managed to change a community who was so racist and had a such a massive hatred for black people and turn them into a community that not only started to cheer for the team but also embrace the black culture. The fact that someone had to endure so much pain mentally and turn it into something constructive is unbelievable. In conclusion, this is why Coach Herman Boone is my hero and how he inspired me to become a better person.

Coach Herman Boone is a role model for not only kids like me but also in my opinion he is a role model for many adults. Coach Herman Boone could be described as a pioneer for his community as he was the one to finally end all the tension in a community. For someone to be able to change a large amount of people so profoundly and to turn hatred to love takes a special person to do. Coach Herman Boone will always be an inspiration to me. He taught me and many other people to find peace and work together with people that you are “programmed” to despise and create something memorable. I believe everyone should learn from Coach Herman Boone and try to be the best person that they can be, just like Coach Herman Boone did.
