Kevin Garnett

by Jimmy from Glenbrook Middle School

“I'm from the bottom, so I understand what it's like to have and to not have. My perception on giving is to put yourself in those people's shoes and go from there. So that's what I did.” - KG

My hero is Kevin Garnett, a forward for the Boston Celtics. Kevin Garnett was born on May 19, 1976 in Mauldin, South Carolina. Even though he is one of the best players in the NBA, that isn’t why he is my hero. I chose Kevin Garnett as my hero because he is giving, and unselfish. He puts others before himself, which is a very admirable trait. He has helped less fortunate people, and has contributed time and money to different organizations. Garnett also affected me in basketball, where I model my game after his.

Kevin Garnett has inspired me in many ways. First, he has given back to his community and for that, he has received the Community Assist Award from the National Basketball Association. Garnett took Hurricane Katrina very hard, he knew people who had been leaving the New Orleans area only 36 hours before the hurricane hit. To help the people affected, he participated in the NBA Players Hurricane Game to raise money for relief. In addition, he donated 1.2 million dollars to Oprah’s Angel Foundation, his donation helped those whose homes were displaced and family members killed.

Next, and maybe one of the most generous thing he has done, is open a Technology Center at Washburn High School in Minneapolis through his 4XL Foundation. Their mission is to connect minority high school and college students with business leaders and guidance counselors, while preparing them for business-related careers and entrepreneurship.

Kevin Garnett has made smart decisions throughout his life. He has gone through very hard times, but has managed to get through them. I strive to be like Kevin Garnett as a person, and hopefully as a basketball player.
