Mae Jemison

My hero is Mae Jemison. I think she is a hero because she is an astronaut and she worked in a refugee camp. She joined the Peace Corps and went to Cuba, Africa, and Asia to help people that were sick.

Mae Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama. She can speak four languages: Swahili, Russian, English, and Japanese.

Mae Jemison worked really hard to become a astronaut. She went to Stanford University and graduated with both a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. in African-American Studies. She went Cornell University and she became a M.D. in 1981. She applied to get into NASA and she was picked over 2000 other applicants.

Mae Jemison was the first black female to go into space. She traveled in space for eight days. She worked on many experiments. She tried for the first time to fertilize frog eggs. She also studied how people and animals lose bone tissue when they are in space. Mae Jemison was put in the International Space Hall of Fame.

I think Mae Jemison is my hero because she was the first black women to go to space and joined a refugee camp to help people that are homeless because of the war and joined the Peace Corps to help people and supervise staff.
