Who would have known on August 7, 1987 a miracle would be born? Sidney Patrick Crosby was born in Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia, Canada. He started playing hockey in his basement as a little boy. He used to shoot pucks at his dryer to practice his skills. When he was very little he played Timbit Hockey. Timbit hockey is a program for children that is sponsored by Tim Horton's. By age seven Sidney was already known to the local sports press for his hockey skills. When Sidney was 13 years old, the Nova Scotia Minor Hockey League didn't let him play in the Midget League because he was too good for it. After scoring 193 points in 74 games it was clear that he was unlikely to return to the Nova Scotia AAA league. He then went to play in a high school hockey league in the United States.

After leaving Nova Scotia, Crosby went to school at the Shattuck-St. Mary prep school in Minnesota. While playing for the school's team, he made a new scoring record by scoring 72 goals and 110 assists for a total of 182 points. He accomplished this in 57 games. His team then went on to win their league. After high school, he was drafted first overall to the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In his rookie year he played 59 games and scored 54 goals and had 84 assist for 138 points.

Crosby's success continued into his professional career in the NHL. On July 22, 2005 Sidney was drafted to the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League. In 2007 he became the youngest captain in the NHL, and in 2009 he won the Stanley Cup--the top prize in professional hockey. In 2010 he got the overtime goal in the final game of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics to win the Olympic gold medal against the United States of America. While Crosby played for the Penguins, he lived with former NHL superstar Mario Lemieux and his family in Sewickley, Pennsylvania from 2005 until 2010. In the spring of 2010 Crosby purchased his own home in the same area.

Not only is Sidney Crosby a great hockey player, he also is a good role model and supports many charities. Crosby is now the spokesperson for Dempster's Bread and he is trying to promote healthy eating habits. Sidney created the Sidney Crosby foundation in 2009. His foundation is operated out of his home province of Nova Scotia and helps give financial support to the different charities around Nova Scotia, especially ones that help children. After the 2010 Olympic Games, Sidney donated his gold medal winnings to the Sidney Crosby Foundation.

Overall, Sidney Crosby is a great hockey player. He has won a Stanley Cup, the Olympics, and led the World Juniors to a Championship. But that's not all; he is also known for being a great hero to kids and adults everywhere. He has a charity--the Sidney Crosby Foundation--that helps other charities--how great is that? Not only is he a miracle of hockey, but his work has made miracles possible for others.
