Cleopatra

by Ashleigh from Lancaster

Cleopatra is one of the most infamous women in history. She conquered countries and men .Cleopatra was the last sovereign of the Macedonian dynasty. She had a vision to become an independent monarch over Egypt. With this vision she set out to do things no one else had. Cleopatra became a legend in her own time and a legend for generations there after. Since her time there have been none quite like that of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.

During her reign, not only did she take control of Egypt but she captivated the hearts of many along the way. In order to gain the power she desired she sought out and caught the eye of the highest in power and rank...Julius Caesar. Because of her power over him, he appointed her co-regent and gave her complete dominion over Egypt. While in power Cleopatra extended her territory and developed an irrigation system that still stands today. During this time Cleopatra showed great dedication to her country and her people. But her reign of glory was short lived, due to the untimely assasination of Julius Caesar. Although she had heightened her profile and made herself known to the public, at this time, she had very little power.

For the good of her country and for herself, Cleopatra had to restore Egypt to its former glory. In order to do this Cleopatra sought to win the heart of Mark Antony, the next in command. He was immediately taken aback by her overwhelming grace and charisma. Mark Antony and Cleopatra reigned together in Egypt for about ten years and eventually married. Cleopatra was greatly disliked by the Roman public. But even with the complications she went on, striving to better the lives of her people.

Although she had much power with Antony at her side, that was not enough to keep herself and Mark Antonty safe from the Roman army. The Romans Declared war against Egypt and won, Antony was killed and Cleopatra held prisoner. She was treated like a prisoner, but was still Queen of Egypt and composed herself as such. Towards the end of her confinment Cleopatra took her own life. She had an asp smuggled into her chambers and it bit her bosom and she died.

The eventual demise of Cleopatra brought her reign to an end. But it did not kill the legend of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. She may have died, but she died with dignity and grace. She refused to be humiliated and took her own life. The very thought of Cleopatra inspires thoughts of grandeur, power and grace....The true definition of a hero.
