Lloyd Sandau is my grandfather and an unbelievable man who lots of people look up to. Lloyd comes from a small town in Saskatchewan called Maple Creek. He grew up on a farm. Lloyd comes from a family of 10, including his mom and dad, plus five girls and three boys (including him). Every single one of them worked very hard on the farm. Unfortunately they were still quite poor, with hardly enough money for groceries. Lloyd is the second oldest of eight. His favorite subject in school was math. He missed a lot of school because he had to go and work on farms to get money for the family. He ended up with an eighth-grade education. He is extremely smart and educates many people nowadays.

After several years on the farm, he moved to Calgary when he was 17. Soon after, he met Carol, who became his wife. They have been happily married for 46 years. They have three daughters and a son.

Lloyd learned how to be a plumber and later started his own business when he was 28 and was very successful at it. He was admired and respected by those who worked for and with him. He provided much support and many opportunities for his employees. They knew they could count on him as a boss and as a friend. Lloyd was generous with the money he earned, using it to help friends, family and to support church work.

Lloyd is a very kind man who always puts the needs of others before himself and is always willing to lend a hand. He is amazingly humble, patient and kind. Lloyd put in many years doing different types of volunteer work and community service. He has volunteered on many committees that serve others, including: Lion's Club, numerous church committees, Mechanical Contractor's Assoc., and Springbank Park for All Seasons. He also has spent many years coaching and organizing sports for kids and youth.

This man is very devoted to his family. Lloyd and his wife built a home for their family on an acreage which they eventually subdivided so their children and grandchildren could live nearby. Through all of Lloyd's hard work, he overcame hardship and poverty. Lloyd is always hardworking, kind, full of commitment, faith, humility, honesty, sincerity, loyalty and wisdom. Many people have learned from Lloyd. They've learned that being a hard worker pays off and that being generous and kind makes you a better person.

My Papa, as I call him, believes that if you have faith in God, He will get you through your bad times and make good times better. I know my Papa has a great quality of life. His life is filled with love, family, friends and happiness.

I think that Lloyd is a hero because he has helped many people in business, the community and family by generously giving his time, love and wisdom. Lloyd did this when he was young and continues to live this way now.

He is a hero to me because he has always been there for me, when I was first born to now, because he is my grandfather. He helps me lots now by spending time with me. My Papa supports me by cheering on my accomplishments. We all enjoy his sense of humor and his love for playing games, especially when playing hide and go seek. He also takes time to explain things, teaching and loving me, my brothers and cousins.

Lloyd is not only a hero to lots of people, but he also has his own hero. His hero is God. This shows in his beliefs and values. He is a strong man who almost always does the right thing, not the popular thing. He stands up for what he believes in.

Lloyd is currently living in Springbank, Alberta, in a beautiful house beside mine and my family's house. He enjoys spending his summers, fall and spring going camping to many different places, exploring the countryside and golfing. Lloyd and his wife, Carol, are snowbirds and drive away to Arizona in the last bit of fall and fly home for Christmas. Then they fly back to Arizona for the rest of winter and the beginning of spring. While Lloyd and Carol are in Arizona, they like golfing, shuffling, and spending time with friends, both new and old. Lloyd is a devoted family man and enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, his own kids and wife. This is why he is my hero.
