Misty May-Treanor

by Jennaleigh from Columbus

Misty May-Treanor has overcome many obstacles in her life. She is a beach volleyball player as well as a legend. She is a very accomplished player. She has won best offensive player in 2004-2007 and best defensive defensive player in 2006-2007. She has been through some tough times but she still follows her heart.

Misty May was born on July 30, 1977 in Santa Monica, California. She has two brothers and no sisters. Misty went to college at Long Beach State. She grew up playing volleyball with her father, Butch, a former player on a U.S team, and her mother, Barbara. Misty May quit volleyball because it “wasn’t fun anymore.” She soon joined again after she “missed the game too much.”

In 2002, Misty’s mom died from cancer. It took her a very long time to get over it. She competed in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, with her partner Kerri Walsh. They won the gold. They competed in the Olympics in Beijing, China as well. They won the gold there, too which made it a sweep, two gold medals in a row! They were undefeated. Misty made it a tradition to spread her mom’s ashes at the Olympics when they win!

Misty is married to baseball player Matt Treanor. She is my hero because she has been through injury but she still goes on with what she loves. She uses her perseverance and determination to get through anything thrown her way!

One of Misty’s favorite quotes is, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.” by Archie Griffin. To me this quote means that no matter the skill level or height or weight of your opponent, all that matters is your determination and perseverance. That is what makes Misty such a good role model and hero!
