Mount Rushmore
by Kay Smith, Artist Laureate of Illinois
One of the most majestic man-made sights in the United States, Mount Rushmore was created under the inspired leadership of sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who worked from 1927 to 1941 carving the likenesses of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt out of the granite face. The presidents were chosen to represent, respectively, the nation's founding, philosophy, unity and expansion.
