Old State Capitol, Springfield, (Third Capitol of Illinois)
Kay Smith, Artist Laureate of Illinois

The state Capitol was moved to Springfield from Vandalia in 1839 and served as the State House until 1876. Borrowing from the ancient Greeks to symbolize progress and democracy the building is said to have a perfectly balanced design with its classic columns and other classic details on the exterior. Abraham Lincoln delivered his unforgettable "House Divided" speech here when he was running for U.S. Senate against Stephen Douglas in 1858. He lost the election but his speech and campaign garnered him a following that helped him win the presidency in 1860.
