Vicksburg Battlefield
by Kay Smith, Artist Laureate of Illinois
This spectacular panorama overlooking the Mississippi River dramatically shows the Civil War battlefield at Vicksburg. The struggle for control of the river dominated the war in the west in the spring of 1863, and the eventual Union victory catapulted Grant to the top list of northern generals. The Confederate Army, with all supplies exhausted and their men and townspeople starving, surrendered on July 4, 1863.
