Abraham Lincoln lived from February 12, 1809 to April 16, 1865. He lived in Harden County, Kentucky. Abraham was trying to help the black people because the blacks were slaves and Abraham Lincoln didn’t like that very much. He wrote letters to Henry Pierce and Joshua Speed and made speeches to a lot of people. This is very important because if he didn’t pass the law of no slavery then slavery would have lasted much longer in our country. Slavery was one of the big things that Abraham Lincoln accomplished.

One example of how Abraham Lincoln was a hero was the Emancipation Proclamation. This was when Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves. This fits my definition of a hero because he changed the slave’s lives and also the people around them by freeing them. Most slaves were not freed automatically. Thousands of slaves were free as soon as the proclamation was made. The second part of the proclamation started 100 days after the first part which happened on September 22, 1862. 20,000 slaves were freed on January 1, 1863. Abraham Lincoln once said "You dislike the emancipation proclamation; and, perhaps, would have it retracted. You say it is unconstitutional. I think differently." He was talking to the South and how they wanted to get rid of the Emancipation Proclamation but Abraham Lincoln wanted to keep it.

Another example of how Abraham Lincoln was a hero is how he ended the war. This fits my definition because he won the war and if he didn’t win that war we would be a separate country from the South. He wanted to keep North and South together. The South wanted to become a separate country because they didn’t like Abraham Lincoln and the North wanted to stay together because they liked Abraham Lincoln. So they went to war. He also won that war which helped him cancel slavery. This impacted people’s lives by him keeping the sections together as one big country. Abraham Lincoln once said "You are ambitious, which, within reasonable bounds, does well rather than harm."

The South would not think that Abraham Lincoln was a hero. They thought that slavery was needed but the North, which was where Abraham Lincoln was, thought that slavery was wrong. They went to war to try and keep slavery. Abraham Lincoln kept his people together through the war and kept on fighting because he knew he had to and he wanted to. He loved his country and he was going to fight for it no matter what.

Abraham Lincoln helped the people that were after him because he stopped slavery. He got rid of the slavery by doing the Emancipation Proclamation. The country really changed because they had to learn to do things on their own and do things without slaves.

What do you think a hero is to you? A hero to me is someone that you look up to and is your idol. Also a hero to me is someone who makes a big change in your life. That’s exactly what Abraham Lincoln is, a hero. In this essay I will prove that Abraham Lincoln was a hero because he made a big change in people’s lives by freeing the slaves. People now wish they could do something as big as he did.
