Abraham Lincoln

by Matthew from Roseville

Abraham Lincoln was born on crisp cool morning of February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He grew up on a farm with his family, until October 5, 1818 his mother died of milk sickness which led them to move to Spencer County, Indiana. Abraham Lincoln grew up with courage, hope, strength and ability to rule with a iron fist and at the same time a soft heart. This and many more traits led to amazing achievements later in life.

When Abraham Lincoln grew up a Wig until he was around his late 40's he turned to be a Republican. Also in his later life he married a woman by the name of Mary Ann Todd she was born on December 13, 1818 and sadly died on July 16, 1882. One thing Abraham accomplished was being the 16th president of the United States 1861-1865 and being the first Republican in office (The White House). When Abraham Lincoln was president in his first term his Vice President was Hannibal Hamlin and in his second term was Democrat Andrew Johnson, he chose a Democratic Vice President because he was trying to unify the United States of America to stop the Civil War. This was an accomplishment because it led the Republican Party to grow stronger in their political power.

One of Abraham Lincoln's bigger hero accomplishments was creating a national banking system with the national banking act in 1863, resulting in a standard American currency. This accomplishment showed his trait of hope because he created a banking currency that might have not even worked and put America in a worse position, but he kept hope and finally it let to what is the American currency today. Another one of Abraham Lincoln's bigger accomplishments was keeping America on decent terms with foreign powers while we had our civil war, because he did not do that, then France or England (for example) could have interfered in our civil war. This accomplishment showed courage and hope because he forced other countries to stay out of the war and make them believe that America would settle it alone. One other achievements of Lincoln were issuing the Emancipation Proclamation which began the process of freedom for America's slaves. The document also allowed black soldiers to fight for the Union.

Abraham Lincoln's biggest achievements were ending the civil war and freeing the slaves. He ended the Civil War by supporting the Union (the North against slavery). He supported the Union by supplying them with weapons, food, water and clothes, and also by giving battle plans. The battles of civil war ended bloody and with dead bodies of soldiers everywhere. After some bloody battles Lincoln enforced laws to stop the war, one of the laws was the Marshall Law which is temporary rule by military authorities, imposed on a civilian population especially in time of war or when civil authority has broken down. Lincoln used this to stop Maryland from joining the Confederacy and by imprisoning some of the Maryland government officials. With Lincoln winning the war it led to the freedom of slaves. Both these achievements showed courage, bravery, ruling with an iron fist and at the same time a soft heart.

So far in my life Lincoln's great acts of heroism have helped through making right decisions and know how to work things out at the right level. Also Abraham Lincoln's choices in his life changed mine by doing better for people and not for better for other things. Also his decisions have helped me be more courageous and compassionate. Abraham Lincoln should be a inspiration to others because he had fought a people who cannot fight and against the people who are cruel to their fellow man. Overall Lincoln is a hero because he changed America and helped better it and freed a whole entire race of people.

Since Abraham Lincoln went through his rough times of his mother dying and having to move states as a poor family, it led to his heroism traits of courage, hope, strength and ability to rule with a iron fist and at the same time a soft heart. These traits led him to change America by creating a national banking system and freeing slaves by supporting the Union in the Civil War and also being the 16th president of the United States and marrying Mary Ann Todd. These acts of heroism are so great that they live on through me and others to this day.
