Abraham Lincoln

by Libbie from Overland Park

Abraham Lincoln was an accomplished man, he reached many of his political goals, and he is said to never have told a lie. He demonstrated many virtues including; honesty, courage, respect, perseverance, and above all, responsibility. He is an American hero in spite of the odds, he was against slavery. He fought through all the bad times, harsh words, and riots. Abraham Lincoln also was the United States of America's 16th President.

Abraham was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. His father was Thomas Lincoln and his mother was Nancy Hanks. When Abe was a boy, he didn't know that he would grow up to be such an important figure. Abe did work around the farm, and the house. When he became a young man, he started to begin his career. During the year of 1824 Abraham attended school in the fall and winter, and read any chance he got. It wasn't until 1830, that Abe started studying for the law. In 1832, Abe made his first political speech in favor of improving navigation on the Sangamon River. In that same year, he was elected for the Illinois general assembly, but sadly he lost. He tried for many other positions in the political party, but lost many until, May 18, when he was nominated to be the Republican candidate for the president of the United States. On March 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as 16th U.S. President.

Abraham showed much heroism throughout his life. One of these times was a few years before he became president; there was an assassination attempt that failed. Abe was planning to travel by train to Washington D.C. for his first Inaugural Address, and he was going to stop in Baltimore. A spy named Allan Pinkerton had found out that someone was going to attempt to kill Abraham Lincoln before his Inaugural Address. Pinkerton told him to skip stopping in Baltimore, and arrive in Washington D.C. early and in disguise so he wouldn't get caught. At first, Abe was being stubborn and wouldn't do it, but in the end, he arrived early, and was never hurt when he arrived for his first Inaugural Address. I thought this showed heroism because he could've just skipped the ride altogether, but he was determined to tell the people about his thoughts and plans. He did it for the people. Abraham Lincoln ended up dying by the hand of John Wilkes Booth, on April 14, 1865, and he died a hero.

Overall, I think Abraham Lincoln was a true hero. He showed heroism when he showed up in front of huge crowds and spoke for the good of them, when he stood up for what he believed in, when he dismissed the idea of being assassinated and went on speaking, and when he became our 16th president. He showed courage, respect, responsibility, perseverance, and honesty throughout every day. Abe was always working for what he believed in, always trying hard, and doing his best, and he succeeded. Abraham Lincoln was a real Hero to me.
