A “hero of all time” is a person who is remembered throughout the years and defines what heroes are. Abraham Lincoln is a “hero of all time.” He is a hero of all time because he started the protest against slavery and he held our country together through the Civil War.

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. Lincoln had an older sister named Sarah and a younger brother named Thomas. In 1816 Lincoln and his family moved to Indiana, partly because they were Baptist and slavery was against their religion. In 1830 they moved again to Illinois. While growing up Lincoln was a local wrestler and was very skilled with an axe. He did not hunt or fish because he did not like killing animals for fun or for food.

In 1832 Lincoln started his political career. The first year he tried he was not elected, but then two years later he was elected as a Whig, for the first of four years. After the four terms Lincoln opened a store in New Salem, Virginia that sold tea, sugar, coffee, salt, blue calico, brown muslin, whiskey and straw hats. In 1834 Lincoln won an election making him the state legislature. While in office he taught himself law and became a lawyer. In 1837 he protested against slavery at the Illinois House. He stated that slavery was “in-just and bad.” Lincoln was a captain in the Black Hawk War. For eight years he was the Illinois Legislator.

In 1858 he ran against Stephen A. Douglas for Senator, but lost. Even though he lost he was appointed with a national reputation for debating with Douglas, and then was elected to be the President in 1860. On January 1, 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the document freed all the slaves in the Confederacy. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slaves it made more black soldiers join the military to fight in the Civil War. Lincoln was reelected in 1864 because he won the Civil War. Later on April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre, by John Wilkes Booth. John was an actor and he thought that he was helping the south when he killed Lincoln. John was going to kidnap Lincoln but after the Civil War he decided just to kill him.

I think that Lincoln was a “hero of all time” because he had ambition to make the United States, “United.” He stopped slavery and won the Civil War. Even though some people hated him he believed that they could be changed. He formed the United States again.
