Abraham Lincoln

by Natalia from Selden

A hero is somebody who does extraordinary things. A hero will fight for what they believe is right. This may even change a country’s laws. The have the hope and spirit to never give up. Maybe your hero is a person who risked their life to save another person on 9-11. Sadly, some die trying. My hero had dedication to his country and was murdered for fighting for what he believed in. This person is Abraham Lincoln. Even though he lived long ago, he is still remembered today. He is known throughout the world for being a great leader.

Abraham Lincoln was born in February 12, 1809. He had a sad childhood. He was in a poor family and because of that he didn’t go to school that much. He still continued with his studies at home. His older sister died because of giving child birth. His mother later died when he was nine years old and later his father got remarried. His step-mother was Sarah Bush Johnston. Soon he started to call her “mother”. Lincoln didn’t like his father that much; they did not understand each other. At age 22 years old he went on his own and went to the village called Salem.

In 1840 he got engaged to Mary Todd. The wedding was on November 4, 1842 in a Springfield mansion. When Abraham Lincoln had two children he was so fascinated with them. The two children's names were Edward Baker Lincoln and Robert Todd Lincoln. Sadly they both died at a young age. The cause of their deaths was from diseases. Lincoln’s wife suffered very much by her loss of their children. They say that she had mental problems after that. One time she tried to attempt to bring one of her children's spirits back. Abraham Lincoln also suffered but didn’t show his emotions.

Abraham Lincoln ran for president. He was outspoken and talked about the unfairness toward the African Americans. Many people agreed and voted for him. The southerners hated him because many southerners owned slaves to make their lives easier. When Abraham Lincoln was elected to become the 16th president of the United States, the South wanted to secede from the country. Now the North and the South had battles which later turned into the “Civil War”. This was the start of a country breaking apart and Abraham Lincoln’s duty was to stop it. On April 19, 1865, Abraham Lincoln completed his mission as president and unified the country once more. Also slavery was abolished. In April 15, 1865 Abraham Lincoln was murdered while seeing a play called “Our American Cousin.” He was murdered by John Wilkes Booth.

Many people would say Lincoln was a great leader and had dedicated his life to his country. Many people back then didn’t know how much he suffered in his personal life. Many people he cared for and loved died during the Civil War. Even though he was going through pain, he still did his duties as president and reunited America. This is why I chose Abraham Lincoln as my hero.
