"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." (Rocky Balboa). This quote describes the outlook of Benjamin Carson's life. Born on September 18, 1951, Carson had to endure hard circumstances in his childhood because he was considered different. He was pushed and shoved by the words of discouragement that his peers gave him. Through his determination, he was able to get back up and keep going on the road. During his childhood, in a ghetto area, Carson was discouraged because classmates told him that he was not smart, but his mother helped him learn to believe in himself and gave him encouragement. He became number one in his class and eventually went to Australia as a resident to study and practice more to become a neurologist. After a year, he went to John Hopkins to become neurologist and a professor. Carson possessed three major heroic traits. His determination proved when he never gave up during his challenging childhood and he frequently motivates others who are discouraged and hopeless. Carson helps people to not give up. He is a true hero because he consistently uses determination, faith, and motivation to help others.

Despite his discouragement by teachers and peers, Carson displayed determination. Carson was bullied most of the time because he was not as smart as others kids in his class. He was "considered the 'dummy' of the class." It was a position for which he "had no competition," he related in his book Gifted Hands. (Ben Solomon Carson). For a split second he thought that he was not smart enough to become a doctor and had no chance of being one. Luckily, his determination pulled him through that obstacle. Nobody else thought he could make it, but his mom believed and had enough hope for the both of them. Carson was bullied not only because he was "dumb," but also because he was a different race than his peers. During his school days, in the early 1960s, Carson and his brother encountered prejudice. "A gang of white boys threatened to kill the young Carsons, who attended the mostly white Wilson Junior High." (Ben Carson). Ben Carson had to endure much of the bullying that was going on because he was African American. Carson had lots of hard times and could have certainly given up, but he did not because he was determined to fight through his struggles. Throughout his childhood, Carson displayed determination in overcoming obstacles and inspired others to do the same.

In addition to his determination, he also uses his motivation to inspire others. Since he grew up in a ghetto area, most people did not think he had the potential to succeed. After his surprising success, he motivates others by saying "It doesn't matter if you come from the inner city. People who fail in life are people who find lots of excuses. It's never too late for a person to recognize that they have potential in themselves."(Ben Carson). Ben Carson has had tragic experiences with racism and bullying, but later he has become mentally strong and decided to motivate others that might have the same experiences as well. Ben Carson is a different kind of neurologist who has a different perspective on life. Carson is someone "who thrived on cases that other doctors deemed hopeless." (Ben Solomon Carson). Knowing what is feels like to be hopeless, Dr. Ben Carson encourages people that anything is possible regardless of who you are. He never turns away patients without trying to help them. He is motivational because his actions have motivated people to try their best in everything they do and not to give up. Ben Carson is someone who would rather help patients who are totally hopeless and is turned away by other doctors than patients that are definitely curable. His example revives other people's hopes and motivates others to not give up.

Benjamin Carson uses faith in everything he does. After he attempted to stab his friend in the stomach "Carson was shocked at what he had almost done, and he saw the direction his life could take. This experience drove him more deeply into his religion--he remains a Seventh-Day Adventist" (Benjamin Carson). While Carson finally realized about his wrong-doing, it became his turning-point of his life. He realized that without God, he couldn't do it alone. Not only did he develop his faith for his turning-point in his life, but he also still devotes sometime to God to meditate and learn more about him."Carson still spends time reading Proverbs every day. There is a certain irony in his love of Proverbs and the effect the book has had on his life." (Signs of the Times) Carson did not abandon God, but he continually was faithful to him asking for guidance. Carson consistently uses his faith. He shows that with faith, you can overcome the temptation of being prideful.

Carson uses determination, motivation, and humility to set an example of what a true hero is like. His life showed me new way of looking at life. He indirectly told me that everyone has the potential to do something incredible only if they choose to do it. However he never says that you will definitely succeed. You will have obstacles, struggles, and defeat because all that leads to success. You will always have helpers along the way that might have answers to questions you have. Don't be discouraged because you have the potential to do anything. All that matters is whether you will keep going or turn back.
