In honor of Beverly Cleary, I did research about this hero in “Biography Today.” I chose her because I thought her name was cool.

Who knew such a normal beginning would give the world such a hero? Beverly Bunn Cleary was born April 12, 1916, in McMinnville, Oregon. She was the only child of Chester and Mable Bunn. Cleary was married in 1940 to Clarence Cleary, and in 1955, she and her husband had twins, Marianne, now a cellist, and Malcolm, now a banker. As a child she spent her childhood in a 13-room farmhouse that was in her father’s generation.

The foundation of heroism is education. She went to Fernwood Grammar school, and Grant High School both in Portland. She also went to Junior college in California. Beverly was one of forty kids in her first grade classroom with a teacher that ruled by fear and shame. Beverly was not paying attention one day and got hit in the hands with a bamboo stick by her teacher.

Hard work contributes to heroism. Cleary recalls the setting for her first attempt at writing. She sent Henry Huggins to only one publisher- William Morrow in New York. The first editor who read it decided that Morrow would publish it. Beverly then became a famous writer. Beverly Cleary is still living today she is 95 years old.
