“I did it! I made electricity.” Benjamin Franklin was the first to discover electricity. Franklin got string, tied the string to a key and a kite and then lightning struck him. That must have hurt. Benjamin Franklin is not just an inventor, a scientist, and a printer. He is a hero. A hero is unselfish, inspiring, and encourages people to stand up for themselves.

Benjamin Franklin was born January 17, 1706, in Boston. He was the tenth of fifteen kids. When Benjamin was twelve years old, he was poor. He went out to get a job. The job he got was at a printing and writing shop. When he got the job at the printing and writing shop, he had to work for his brother James. When Benjamin was fourteen years old, he sometimes wrote his own stories and articles. If the story or article was really good or interesting, then James, his older brother, would put the story in the newspaper. When Benjamin was fourteen years old, he ran away from home. Then when he was fifteen years old he came back home. At the age of seventeen, Benjamin went to Philadelphia. When Benjamin was living in Philadelphia, he got a job as a printer and a writer. A couple of years later when Benjamin was twenty years old he bought and opened his own printing and writing work shop. Benjamin died in 1762 at the age of 56.

Inspiring means that you do something that someone thinks is amazing. He was inspiring to the people because he wrote great things in the articles in the newspaper and in books. Some people were inspired from what Benjamin Franklin wrote. Benjamin was happy when people were inspired by him. I bet people are still inspired by Benjamin Franklin. For twenty-five years Benjamin Franklin published Poor Richard's Almanac. This book contained many sayings like, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” Another one is, “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

Unselfish means that you care about other people more than yourself. Benjamin was unselfish because he helped everyone in America. The new government and new country experienced difficult times fighting for their rights. Another reason why Franklin was unselfish is because, when Franklin was little his family was poor, and Franklin did not complain about being poor. He helped his family by getting a job as a printer and a writer.

Encouragement means to inspire someone with great courage, spirit, and confidence. Benjamin Franklin encouraged people to stand up for themselves. He wanted people to inspire others to fight for their freedoms. But Benjamin Franklin wanted to do this peacefully, not with violence. He organized many peaceful protests against wars.

Benjamin is important to me because he encouraged me to write when I first read his article. I felt bad for some of the things that happened to him during his life time. He changed my life because he inspired me to write and I have been getting great at writing. Franklin encouraged me to stand up for myself when I think something is wrong. I think he is a great person. I hope you think so, too.
