Derek Burrows

Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his/her life to someone bigger or smaller than oneself.” In other words, they risk their life for anyone who’s in need. Heroes have many qualities, for example bold, extraordinary, admired, honest, positive, fearless, compassionate, and loyal. Each hero is completely different and is known for different deeds. Heroes can be personal or complete strangers. Heroes have different points of view and come in all different shapes and sizes. Derek Burrows of the Bahamas is a hero to many Bahamian people because of his musical ability and story- telling abilities.

Derek Burrows studied music at Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts for 25 years. He played the flute and performed as a classic guitarist and singer. Derek performed with the international music group called Voice of the Turtle. Burrows was recently one of four national storytellers invited to be a part of the 1st National Book Festival. This is sponsored by the White House and first lady, Laura Bush.

Derek performs for schools, libraries, and museums. His most recent work is a short film called, Mr. Nassau Bahamas. Not only is Derek a storyteller, but he teaches children about the world by using Caribbean songs, American folk songs, Medieval music, and myths and legends about Africa.

Derek Burrows is a hero because not only is he a musical inspiration, but he also teaches children about cultures and countries, as well as not getting them bored with his true stories. Some of Derek’s qualities are inspiring, loyal, and committed. He inspires children and is loyal and committed to his work. Derek is an amazing person and also is unpredictable in what he does.

In conclusion, a hero is someone who is extraordinary; a person who would stand out in the crowd for his behavior. A hero is someone who has made an impact on someone’s life and can be personal or a complete stranger. Derek Burrows is a hero because he teaches children through his storytelling. Derek is a musical inspiration to all-young and old. Finally, Derek Burrows of the Bahamas is a hero to many children including myself.
