Yagna Nilkesh Choksi

by Sagar from Tarzana

My hero isn’t someone famous, someone who’s saved lives, or someone who has super powers, but it’s someone whose always helped me and kept my brother and me on track. My hero is my mom, Yagna Nilkesh Choksi. She has become my hero more and more over the years, especially in the absence of my dad. My mom is strong, caring and considerate, and always sacrifices for her loved ones.

I love my mom’s willpower and strength. She has come and managed so much in the U.S. without most of my dad’s help, and has achieved a lot with her own strengths. She doesn’t give up. If there is something that cannot be done, she will try other methods, but will get it done. I couldn’t get my license because I don’t have my social security, but she found a way for me to get it after trying for a long time. When my grandpa was sick in the hospital from stomach cancer, the doctors said he needed an operation, which she was there to agree to, and then after the operation, the doctors said he needed another one or he would die. My mom didn’t let them do the second operation since it was only a few days after the first and he wouldn’t be able to handle it. The doctors warned that he would die within weeks, but she didn’t let them. He ended up living for another year.

I love my mom’s concern for others. She understands people from their own point of view instead of just her own and what she wants to think. As I’ve grown up, she’s given me more and more freedom, and without telling her what I want, she already knows it. She lets me do my own thing and doesn’t keep trying to tell me what to do, letting me learn from my own experiences and instead of keeping me on close surveillance. She lets me go and explore what I want to, but with the exception that she knows where I am incase of an emergency. There’s numerous times where she can go and do things by herself, out with friends or for an appointment, but she’ll always cancel or go late if we’re involved in something she’s doing. She’s always there for us whenever we need her, and tries very hard to keep us happy.

Sacrifice. It’s a word that not many people like to do, but know they have to in order to gain something they want. My mom sacrifices a lot for us. No matter if it’s her time, money, or even well-being. Every time I’ve needed something, whether it was some help with something, or a ride, or a way out of a mess, she’s there. When I first got my license I didn’t have a car, and I loved driving. On the weekends whenever I was going out with my friends she would always give me her car, even if she had plans with her friends, and always tried to find another way of going out, that way I can have fun with my friends and the car so that I can be free.

There are some of the reasons and examples why my mom’s my hero. Being caring and considerate, strong, and always putting others ahead of her are the ones I like most. I hope she never changes and keeps being herself. She’ll always be my hero.
