Brittany and Robbie Bergquist started Cell Phones for Soldiers in 2004. They saw news reports about a soldier in Iraqi running up a huge phone bill calling home, so they immediately went into action. To start their fundraising program, they had only $21 until friends, family, banks, etc started chipping in and helping out. The bank also played its part by donating $500.

Cell Phones for Soldiers was started so soldiers in Iraqi can call their family without building up a large phone bill. For the past 4 years, the Bergquist team in a suburb south of Boston has made thousands of hours of conversation possible between deployed American soldiers and their families. Brittany, who turned 14 in November, and her brother Robbie age 12 will continue to work hard to supply soldiers with calling cards so they can contact their families, even if it means missing cheerleading competitions and hockey practice.

Using cash contributions and money obtained from recycling donated cell phones, the program buys calling cards and distributes them to soldiers. Brittany and Robbie are my heroes because they put their time aside to help others.
