Derek Bates

by Brittany from Iowa

My hero is my English teacher’s student teacher, Mr. Bates. I haven’t known him for very long, but he is an awesome person. He has taught me so many things over the past months that he has been here.

Some of the different things that he has done for me and other people are just little things but still they felt so big.

Not very many teachers care that much to do this stuff. But there was a time when this kid in my class was going through a really hard time and I felt really bad. So I went up and talked to that person. Mr. Bates also went up and talked to him for a long time about all the people who wish that they were him.

He has done so many things to change the lives of some of the kids in my class. Later that day the kid we talked to told me that Mr. Bate‘s and I were his heroes. The reason was because he was going to go home and try and hurt himself. Now whether he really was going to do that I don’t know, but at least we kept him from trying. I really think Mr. Bates could be anybody's hero. I was a hero that day with him. I just really want to thank him.

He has also changed the way I look at English. He has an amazing personality and has amazing teaching skills. We tease him all the time but he’s just one of those teachers that you just can. He likes to be teased but he laughs too. He will mess around with us too. We also really like to tease him about his sweaters that he wears. I really like his clothes. Ha ha, so do a lot of the girls in my grade. I am really going to miss him, but at least I still have my other teacher Mrs. Brannian. She’s pretty awesome too. She has a really funny sense of humor. She will laugh at like anything. It’s pretty awesome. Anyways, he needs to be thanked a million times over and over for everything he has done. So thank you, thank you, thank you.

Mr. Bates is my hero!!
