David Crockett

by Bridger from Yucaipa

David Crockett was born on the Seventeenth of August 1786. His hometown is eastern Tennessee. David Crockett is my hero because he was a great peacemaker and fighter. What makes David Crockett so great is that not only was he a great hunter, but he was the Tennessee State Legislator, and part of the U.S. House of Representatives.

When he was young, David was the fifth of nine children. Later at eight years old he ran away to avoid the beating at the hands of his father. During the time he was away he learned skills such as hunting and trapping. Seven years later, at the age of fifteen he returned home. His family was delighted. At the age of eighteen he was almost married to Margret Elder, but she did not show up; she did not want to be married. Two years later (the day before his 20th birthday) he married another woman named Mary Finley.

I think he was a great leader because he was more courageous than any man he ever fought with or for. He was also a great peacemaker because he made peace with the Indians.

If I could meet David Crockett I would ask him what it was like going to war. Was it hard to run or to hide from your enemies? What did you do in the years you ran away, besides learn how to hunt and trap?

Later, in the Alamo, the battle for the state of Texas, David died with sixteen other soldiers. Davy Crockett was a leader, a fighter, hunter, trapper, and a Tennessee State legislator. He was a part of The United States House of Representatives. That is why David Crockett is an American hero.
