Dirk Schulze-Makuch's greatest contribution to space exploration was the proposition of a one way trip to Mars. He wants people in their 60's to go. They would gather information until they die, so the next group would have the information and structures they built. They can go if they want to, but they don't have to.
He wanted people older to go so they could gather information and be ready for the next group. A trip to Mars takes a very long time, and right now we cannot carry enough fuel on the trip to make a return trip possible. If people go and set up a colony on Mars, we may be able to start creating fuel on Mars for the return trip home one day.
The people that helped him were Daul Davies and Washington University. NASA and DARPA are doing a plan called the 100 Year Starship.
Dirk wants to send people to learn about Mars. That group is going to learn and send information to earth. Then they are going to send another group to use the materials the last group made to stay longer.
