John is best known for writing the gospel of John, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John, and Revelation. One of the twelve disciples, John was also known as the disciple whom Jesus loved. He was the one whom Jesus told to take care of his mother after he died. John’s story begins in the Bible when Jesus was walking along the seashore. At that time he called to Andrew, Peter, James, and John to come follow him. When Jesus had picked twelve people to be his disciples, he started traveling around and performing miracles. All this time John was traveling with Jesus and learning all Jesus had to teach. His devotion to Jesus is what makes John my hero.
After Jesus died and was resurrected, and finally ascended into the clouds the disciples received the Holy Spirit and started telling the nations about Jesus’ life. It is believed that John went to the province of Asia and ministered to the people there. Around this time John wrote 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John to the churches he was ministering. After he wrote those three instructive letters he was arrested for being a Christian, which was a crime at that time, and exiled to the island of Patmos. It was on this island that John lived for the rest of his life in captivity. Before John died, he wrote the last book of the Bible after seeing a vision from God about the last days. After he accomplished this last act, his earthly body perished and he went to be with his Lord.
John was always near Jesus and was the first disciple to reach the tomb after Jesus had risen. John was also with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration and on the Mount of Olives. John’s humility is an aspect of his character that he was always improving. At first he had his mother ask Jesus for a seat at his right hand, but after Jesus died John wrote his gospel without even mentioning himself. These aspects of John and many more have made John the disciple my greatest hero.
