"I bet some of you feel sorry for me. Well don't. Having an artificial leg has its advantages. I've broken my right knee many times and it doesn't hurt a bit."

Terrence Stanley Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28, 1958. He went to Simon Fraser University. Terry lived with his father Rolyn Fox, his mother Betty Fox, brothers Fred and Darrel along with his sister Judith. In his spare time he liked to play basketball and read. When Terry was at university he wanted to be on the school basketball team. The coach thought that he was too small. Terry worked very hard and showed perseverance and sportsmanship and finally made the basketball team.

Terry was playing basketball and got pains in his knee. He also felt very dizzy. The doctors told him that he had cancer in his bone above the knee and they would need to amputate his leg. The doctor took him in and gave him an artificial leg. He wanted to run across Canada to collect money for cancer reaserch. Terry's heros are Darryl Sutter and Bobby Orr. Fred and Darrel helped Terry to learn to run with his artificial leg. Then the run began when Terry dipped his leg in the Atlantic. Terry was inspired by Dick Traum, a one-legged man who ran in the New York Marathon.

Terry ran across Canada raising money for cancer research. Terry's brothers Fred and Darrel would drive a van behind Terry so that when nightfall came he would just go to the van and sleep. In the morning he would have breakfast and start to run again. Terry tried to find a cure for cancer by raising money for cancer research.

Terry tried very hard to run across Canada but sadly Terry died June 28, 1982. He thought he would make it all the way. Terry's family was really sad when they heard Terry had died. All the money Terry collected was still sent to cancer research.

I think Terry was very brave to run across Canada when he had bone cancer in the right leg above knee. It was very hard for Terry when his cancer spread to his lungs. I wish Terry was alive right now so I could thank him for all his help to find a cure for cancer.
