Anne Frank vs. Clara Barton

by Maryetta from San Mateo

Two young women who have experienced a somewhat similar life altering events in their lives. Anne Frank on the one hand has always wanted a boyfriend to love and cherish her life with and then she met Peter Vaan Daan. Her favorite hobby was to write in her diary and that is why we have the book today. She loves Peter but is forbidden to even see him in the morning or even at night.

She always used to get mad/angry with her mother and her father. They had arguments like when and how she is going to be able to see Peter again. When she sees Peter she has to break up with him because she was going to the concentration camp and when they were there they had to be separated between boy and girl. Anne Frank once quoted "Who would ever think that so much went on in the soul of a young girl." Thinking of her situation she still was thinking of seeing Peter and probably having a nice date together.

When Anne Frank was in the concentration camp, she suffered a lot because of her illness. She ate horrible and bad tasting food and stayed in an overcrowded barrack. She thought a lot about her best friend Lies and she was very devastated. After a couple of weeks she got a horrible disease called typhus and passed away at the age of 15. Anne Frank wrote in her diary "I live in a crazy time." After reading her story I knew that she really lived in a crazy time. I couldn't imagined all the cruelty imposed to these people during the holocaust... the sacrifices and the unbearable pain and sufferings that they have to bear with while living in a non-humane environment.

My second topic is about my other hero Clarissa Barton. She is the founder of the American Red Cross. Her first job was a school teacher but then she went to college to get a major in medical arts but she found one thing - she loved being the founder of the American Red Cross. She enjoyed helping the sick and injured people. She was never married nor ever had any children to take care of.

She became interested in becoming a nurse when her younger brother got injured from falling from a rafter. She learned to administer all of his medications. She was inspired by her great aunt stories who as a midwife helped deliver about 1,000 infants. Nine days after the start of the Civil War, she tended to wounded soldiers. She was appointed as the 'lady in charge" of the hospital. She was also known as "Angels of Andersonville."

They are similar by how they went through two different wars. Anne Frank hid from the Gestapo and the Nazis. The only thing that kept her company was her diary. Clara Barton went saving the soldiers in the navy. They both went through the life altering events as very brave people. I hope people in the future will remember them as true and thoughtful heroes. I feel deeply sorry and sad for the people who are fighting in the holocaust.
