Anne Frank vs. Rubin (Hurricane) Carter

by Casey from San Mateo

Equality. It may seem like a given. Every human is born with rights, those rights should be given to them with no question. In these two lives they are brought upon with just the opposite. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter and Anne Frank had difficult lives filled with many struggles. Both Anne and Rubin would cope with the unfair, unequal world by writing. It was a way to deal, not just with their surroundings, but with their life-altering moments. Both were trying so hard to find peace within themselves. Underneath all the discrimination, hatred and lies there had to be some faith.

For instance Rubin Carter known as "Hurricane", in the boxing world, has been a suspect of crime based on his race. Rubin was a black man and many, if not all people against him were white. On June 17, 1996 Carter was convicted of shooting a man, a white man. With an all white jury choosing his innocence, he was sent to jail. During his time behind bars he thought about life and how the world was a extremely prejudice place. He ended up writing a book about himself. It was a way to persist throughout this time. Hurricane knew he didn't belong there. He knew he was innocent and did not deserve this. "Reporter: Mr. Carter, now that you're out, are you still going to be "The Hurricane" Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter: Oh, I'll always be the "Hurricane", and a hurricane is beautiful."(Rubin's conversation with a reporter.) This quote shows that he still has his strength and dignity. Rubin finally proved his innocence after twenty years in prison. He now works for an organization in Canada that helps people who have been wrongly accused of a crime.

Anne Frank's whole life turned around when the holocaust began. A time of hatred and discrimination towards Jews. Anne wrote in her diary to deal with everything going on around her. "As long as you can look fearlessly at the sky, you'll know that you're pure within and will find happiness once more."("Diary of Anne Frank", pg.195) She stayed strong throughout the whole experience and learned how to find peace within herself. Anne knew she couldn't stop what was going on, but she made it through with her family's presence. Although Anne was the main reason she stayed positive through the tough and terrible discrimination, the people living the same life as her made a great deal of positive influence on her as a person. She tried her hardest to fight for life, but she couldn't handle it and eventually passed. Anne's spirit still lived on for all of us to take in.

Even though Anne and Rubin had very different stories the ways they would deal with their anger and stress were very similar. They wrote. Letting out all their thoughts to express how they felt. Both of them had been mistreated by society. Neither Anne nor Rubin had done anything wrong to be put in the situation they were in. Their lives were full of prejudice and injustice. Writing down their feelings and thoughts was a way to assure both of them there was still hope.

Anne Frank and Rubin "Hurricane" Carter both lived outrageous and torturous lives. They wrote to deal with their life altering events even though it was tough. They may have had different reasons to be put in the lives they lived, but they still outlasted through it all. It just comes to show how brave, innocent souls can make a difference. Equality for all is a given. Put yourself in their shoes could you, or would you have survived?
