Mia Hamm is a professional soccer player for the women’s U.S. team. She was told she may never play again at her highest level because of her knee injury. Through rehabilitation she tries to find a silver lining. Mia Hamm realizes what matters most to her in her life and finds a way to help others.

Mia Hamm was born in Selma, Alabama on March 17, 1972. She attended college at the University of North Carolina, which is her hometown. Mia Hamm is the first-ever three-time U.S. Soccer athlete of the year, male or female (1994-1996). She is also a member of the Gold Medal winning U.S. Women's National Team at the 1996 and 2004 Olympic Games. Mia said that the 2004 Olympic Games would be her last time performing in front of a world audience. She was told she may never play at her best in soccer again due to her knee injury. She then decided to open foundation that supports bone marrow patients and young women in sports. She is considered to be a hero to others near and far because she pulled through rehabilitation and accepted her fate. She made a difference by helping others that were in her situation.

A hero to others near if far is someone that is set out to help others, and tries to make a difference in the world. Mia Hamm is a hero to others because when she opened her foundation it was helping people that are bone marrow patients and young women in sports. Her foundation also is making a difference in the world to the people that her foundation helps.

Mia Hamm is a hero by setting "goals" for herself on and off of the field. She set a goal in her life to help others and accomplished it. She made a difference in the world. Even though Mia Hamm is no longer playing soccer she still remains a gold medalist on and off of the field.
