Jim Gill

Me and my grandpa in Sea World.

If you look into the eyes of my 79 year old grandfather, you will see a hero - a man who courageously fought in World War 2. He risked his life so others could live. My Grandfather Jim Gill is my hero.

My hero was born on April 14 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Right now my grandpa lives in Gulfport, Florida in the winter and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the summer. My grandpa’s favorite charity is Salvation Army. In the army, my grandpa’s rank was 1st Class Private. On December 31, 1946 Jim Gill was married to Florence Walsh, my grandmother and not long after my grandmother gave birth to my aunts and uncle and finally to my dad. My grandpa enjoyed teaching my dad to hunt. He has passed this tradition down and now my dad is teaching me how to hunt also.

When I asked my grandpa "Who is your hero and why?" He answered "Harry Truman because he was the most honest president." When I asked, "What inspired you to join World War 2?" He replied' "I knew I would be drafted at age 18 so I did it early." When I asked, "What do you do with your free time?" he answered, "Take care of your grandma, golf and exercise."” I asked "What has been your hardest obstacle to overcome and why?" he responded "When living by Benny road he had to take out $12,000 and to make a decision to buy a building but he was $8.00 off budget that was 55 years ago when a loaf of bread was $0.05 and a quart of milk was $0.15 so I worked harder and paid it off. In 3 years it was paid off," he said.

My grandpa has 4 children and they are one of his biggest accomplishments. One of my hero’s most admirable accomplishments is that he survived World War 2. One thing my hero has inspired me to do is to persevere and to never give up. Another reason my grandpa is my hero is because he has taught me that if you think you can do it, you can do it.

My grandpa has love, kindness, and courageousness. That is why I picked him as my hero.
