Rosa Parks

by Megan from Alberta

Rosa Louise Parks

Rosa Louise Parks changed Americans, and rewrote history with her courageous act of refusing to give up her seat to a white male passenger while on a city bus. But first Rosa Parks grew up on a small farm with her mother, father, brother, and grandparents. Rosa was born on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee Alabama. First child of Leona and James Edwards McCauley, sister to Sylvester McCauley. Her mother and father separated.

She and the rest of the family move to Pine level. Rosa was home schooled until she was 11, then enrolled at the Industrial School for Girls in Montgomery. Rosa soon went on to a laboratory school set up for secondary education. She was soon forced to drop out, due to her grandmother, soon mother's health. In 1932 Rosa married Raymond Parks, a barber, which took place at her mother's.

On Thursday December 1st. 1955 Rosa headed home on a city bus, tired after a long day. Rosa sat in the middle of the bus. Respecting the rules of the white only section, African Americans were allowed to sit in the middle as long as no white person was standing. Now as the seats were filling up near the middle, the bus driver told Rosa's row to move towards the back. Rosa did not, and because she did not my friend can sit at the front of the bus, if she took one! She is my hero because of what she did for everyone!
