Rosa Parks

by Joana Sevven from Belo Horizonte

A hero for me needs to be brave, a risk-taker, open-minded and needs to have sacrificed a part of his life to help others. Most importantly a hero needs to try to do his best and care about what he is doing. Rosa Parks cared, she really wanted to help, and that’s why she is my heroine!

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was born on February 4th 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. When she was a child she lived on her grandparent’s farm with her mom Leona Edwards. She married Raymond Parks when she was about 21. She died from a disease on October 25th 2005.

Rosa Parks is famous for not giving up her seat to a white person, but she did much more. On the day of the bus boycott or the day she went to jail she said “All I was trying to do was to get home from work’’. Rosa didn’t give up after she went to jail. When she was released she started a strike. Later on, the “bus law” changed. A few years later she started a company with her husband, but soon he died and Rosa ran the business alone. She won many awards: the Martin Luther King Jr. Award and more.

Rosa is really brave if she hadn’t said “No, I will not move!’’ African Americans would still have unequal rights today. She is a heroine for all African Americans and for me!
