My hero is Shel Silverstein. Shel Silverstein was a creative writer and poet. Reading his poems, you can laugh at his characters, laugh at yourself, laugh at the Universe, and wind up a whole lot better.
He also served in the U.S Military Forces during the fifties and wrote some songs. He died in Key West, Florida, May 10th, 1999.
If he had never started writing poetry, I would have never wanted to write poetry myself. He wrote some of my favorite books called the Giving Tree and Falling Up. They are so inspiring!
