Joss Whedon once said, “The thing about a hero, is even when it doesn’t look like there is a light at the end of a tunnel, he’s going to keep digging, he’s going to keep trying to do what’s right and make up for what’s gone wrong, just because that’s who he is.” A hero is someone who never gives up and is hard working. A hero always tries to improve the lives of others they don’t even know. They try to do what’s right for everyone, too. Juan Santamaria, from Costa Rica, is an example of a hero.
Juan Santamaria was born in Alajuela, Costa Rica. He saved Costa Rica from being over ruled by William Walker who planned to take over Central America starting with Costa Rica. Juan was poor and born with an unknown father. No one knows anything about his early life, but they do know he died young. Not only was he shot repeatedly, but he also had cholera, a deadly contagious disease. He was remembered forty years after he had died and was named the nation’s hero. By his burial site, there is a statue of him holding a torch; the statue was placed in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
Juan Santamaria is a type of hero because he is fearless, strong, and confident. He is those qualities because he risked his life to help his country be saved. Juan Santamaria died in about 1851. He was chosen as a hero because he was in one of the lower classes, and it inspired other people in the lower class. It inspired them because it gave them a sense of belonging to Costa Rica.
In conclusion, a hero is always trying to do his/her best to make the world a better place for people they don't even know. Juan Santamaria is a great hero because he saved his country from William Walker. you can ask anyone from Costa Rica, and you will be sure of his existence.
